Vatican checking itself
The Vatican put a Dominican Republic envoy, Wesolowski, under house arrest after being accused of sexually abusing young boys in the Caribbean region. His punishment was one of the harshest the Catholic Church can give: laicization, returning to a life of a layman. He know is in the small police barracks jail of the Vatican. Associated Press. This is said to hear about because the Church has tried extremely hard to get rid of this in its midst. This could affect how people look at the Church after hearing about it from someone in a high position. I think that he is getting off a little easy, I think that he should be criminally charged for what he did.

I agree with Quinn in that this news saddens me. The Church has worked to rid itself of the negative connotations society has impressed upon it regarding sexual abuse, and because of this hot-topic issue, many non-Catholics cannot see past the human imperfections to the wonderful Church that Jesus established. Although I am upset that this fuels the fire of distrust of the Catholic Church, I understand that this news needs to be reported and not hidden.
ReplyDeleteThis is a horrible situation that has become all too common in the Catholic Church. If I were a high member within the Church, I would seriously consider the end of priestly celibacy as an option to combat this growing trend. This may be a bit radical, but something has to be done to end or curb the amount of these horrifying acts.
